Shell Tivela Oils

Synthetic gear oils lor industrial applications

Shell  nvela Oils are high  performance, synthetic, industrial gear oils based on polyalkylene glycol and specially seleded additives. They  are free of chlo­ rine, sulphur and lead based materials.

Enclosed Industrial Gear Units:
Bevel, spiral bevel, helical, enclosed spur and worm gears

Service Life

Shell Tivela Oils will remain homogenous from below the pour points to temperatures in excess of 250°C.

The anticipated  service life is substantially  in excess

of 1 0,000 hours at 100 o C in industrial enclosed  gear units, making extended oil drain intervals possible.

Seal Compatibility

Polyurethane based  elastomers, leather, cork, asbestos,  paper  and  board  should be avoided.

Other common seal and  gasket materials are unaf­ fected  by Shell Tivela Oils. Nitrile Rubber (NBR), Fluoro-Silicone or Vinyl-Methyl Polysiloxane (Q) are recommended  especially  where  high temperatures are  involved.

Ordinary  industrial paints will soften in the presence of Shell Tivela Oils.  Ideally, internal gearbox

Flushing  Procedures

When changing from mineral oil to Shell Tivela Oil the following procedure should be followed:-

Run the system until the mineral oil is warm and then drain as fully as possible, paying  particular attention to reservoirs, lines etc., where oil may be trapped. The system should be cleaned  of residual sludge.

Flush the system with the minimum quantity of Shell Tivela Oil by operating under no load, then drain the system whilst Auid is warm.  Repeat if  necessary.

Seals, etc., should be inspected  and if deteriorated then replaced.  Seals  previously exposed  to mineral oil may shrink when exposed to Shell Tivela Oil, and therefore it may be advantageous to replace them.

Refill the system with the appropriate grade of Shell Tivela Oil.  Inspect the lubricant after one or two days in use to make sure that it is free from extrane­ ous materials.  Contamination with significant quantities of other lubricants can, in some cases, lead

to sludging, foaming and other problems.

Health & Safety

Shell Tivela Oils are unlikely to present any significant health or safety hazard  when properly  used in the recommended application, and good standards of industrial and personal hygiene are maintained.

Shell Tivela Oils must never be mixed with mineral oil, and ideally not mixed with other polyglcol lubricants in order to preserve their anti-corrosion and demulsification properties.
